How many of us are happy with the way our body looks?
There is some serious pressure from social media and our culture in general to change our current bodies. In the fitness community, a common desire is to gain more muscle while losing more fat. We know that muscle is a good thing; it speeds up our metabolism, contributes to a shapely body and can help with athletic performance.
Body fat, on the other hand, is frowned upon, even though it is a normal part of body distribution. Some body fat is essential, and it does have purpose. Body fat serves as a store of energy for us. If we were to experience a long period without food we could use some of those stores to keep our body alive and functioning. Body fat also provides insulation for tissues and organs and serves as a carrier of some vitamins for metabolism.
Your “body composition” refers to the distribution and amount of fat and fat-free mass on and in your body. Fat-free mass refers to everything that’s not fat, including muscle, organs, bones and fluid.
What is Body Recomposition?
Body recomposition refers to the process of manipulating body fat and muscle mass. Also known as recomp or physique change, body recomposition is less about weight, but instead, focuses on changing your body’s ratio of fat to muscle. In other words, it is reforming your body in a new way, hence “recomposition.” The goal is to gain more fat-free lean muscle mass
Since body recomposition is not necessarily about weight loss, those engaging in recomposition training may not see a change in weight. However, gaining muscle and losing fat provides women with the strong, shapely physique they are striving for.
